What Is Lead Qualification?

Lead qualification is the process of determining whether a new inquiry is a genuine fit for a business — the right service, service area, timeline, and budget — before investing time in pursuing it. In home services it usually means asking a few scope questions in the first reply and politely declining requests the business doesn’t handle.

Why qualification is a speed problem

Qualification and speed are the same race: the research finding behind the famous “21x” statistic is specifically about the odds of qualifying a lead — reaching the customer while they’re still interested and a fit — which drop about 21 times between a 5-minute and a 30-minute response. Wait, and you don’t just lose the chance to reply; you lose the chance to find out whether the job was worth replying to. The sources are in our speed-to-lead statistics.

What qualifying questions look like in the trades

Good qualification is trade-specific. A mover asks for date, home size, and stairs; an HVAC company asks tonnage, square footage, and repair-vs-replace; a cleaner asks beds, baths, pets, and how deep a “deep clean” is. The pattern is constant: one or two concrete questions in the first message that let you quote once, accurately, instead of playing message ping-pong. Our industry pages show per-trade examples of what those first exchanges look like.

The other half of qualification is the polite no. Requests outside your services or area deserve a fast decline — it saves both sides time, and on platforms like Yelp a decline still counts as a reply, protecting your response rate while silence would damage it.

Automating qualification

An AI auto responder can run the first-pass qualification for you: it reads the request, asks the scope questions you’d ask, and distinguishes qualified from unqualified leads. LeadWinner, for example, detects unqualified requests via a “Services Not Offered” list and declines them politely, while qualified leads trigger SMS and email alerts and, when a phone number appears, a 2-way auto-call that connects the owner to the customer live. The owner’s time goes only to leads that already passed the filter.
