What Is Lead Response Time?

Lead response time is the elapsed time between a new lead arriving and the business sending its first reply. Platforms typically track it as a median over a recent window — Yelp, for example, publishes each business’s median response time over the last 30 days — and both customers and ranking algorithms use it as a signal of reliability.

How platforms measure it

The exact formula matters more than owners expect. Yelp calculates response time as the median time to answer new messages over the last 30 days — median, not average, so one slow reply won’t wreck a fast month — and excludes the 6pm–8am after-hours window from the math. The number is displayed on your public profile alongside your response rate. We break the mechanics down in what’s a good Yelp response time in 2026.

Other platforms track the same idea with different plumbing: Thumbtack tells pros that responding quickly helps their rank in customers’ search results, and Google Local Services Ads lists responsiveness among its ad ranking factors, noting that unanswered calls and messages can affect how an ad ranks — Google even publishes a phone response score for LSA.

What counts as a good lead response time

Benchmarks from the research and Yelp’s own published data: under 5 minutes is where qualification odds are highest — the odds of qualifying a lead drop about 21x between minute 5 and minute 30. Under 1 hour is competitive — Yelp’s data says customers are 2x more likely to respond to replies within an hour that address project details. Under 1 day is the bare minimum — sub-1-day responders see about 4x more quote requests. Beyond a day, most jobs are already decided.

Response time compounds with response rate: a fast median with ignored messages still hurts, because every unanswered message drags the rate down — see Yelp response rate for how that half is scored.

Improving it without living in your phone

The standard ladder is notifications and quick replies, then office coverage, then automation. An auto responder keeps the median in the seconds range around the clock — LeadWinner replies to Yelp leads in ~10 seconds and Thumbtack leads in ~20 with a reply generated from the customer’s actual request, which protects the metric and starts the conversation at the same time.
