Thumbtack Instant Reply is a built-in Thumbtack feature that automatically sends a pro’s saved first message the moment a new lead arrives, so no lead sits without a response. It is part of Thumbtack’s messaging tools in the Pro app, is free to use, and sends the same templated message to every lead.
How it works
As of mid-2026 the feature lives in the Thumbtack Pro app’s settings (Thumbtack has rolled it out under its auto-response and Instant Reply tooling — the same idea either way: a templated first message fired the moment a lead arrives). You toggle it on, write your message once, and every new lead receives it instantly. A solid template greets the customer by name, confirms the request, asks one concrete question, and says when you’ll follow up personally.

What it is designed to do — and not do
Instant Reply is by design a single templated message. It sends the same text regardless of what the customer wrote, doesn’t answer their specific question, doesn’t follow up if they go quiet, and can’t qualify a request or give a ballpark. For pros who get a handful of leads a month and reliably send a personal reply within minutes, that’s often enough — the template covers the gap.
The limitation shows up on shared leads: a Thumbtack request typically reaches several pros, and several of them may have auto-replies on too. When multiple templates arrive in the same minute, the race effectively moves to whoever sends the first specific answer — which is where leads tend to ghost template-only responders.
